Skincare Recipes for an At-home facial

There’s nothing like crafting your own skincare products in your kitchen. I don’t know about you but making my own face masks takes my self-care days to a whole new level. Nothing beats a luxurious pampering with natural, holistic ingredients.

Here are some homemade skincare masks that you can make right at home without breaking the bank. Please be aware that these masks are for one or two uses.

Important Note: None of these masks include a preservative, so they will be a breeding ground for bacteria if they aren’t used by the suggested date. Please don’t use past the suggested expiration date listed below! I recommend using these maks the same day you make them. This goes for any skincare recipe you see online that includes water but does not contain a form of preservation (idk why no one ever mentions this!).

Keep in mind that in order to see results of any skincare, products need to be used for more than four weeks.

Turmeric Face Mask

Benefits: Brightening, Anti-Inflammatory, Reduce Hyperpigmentation, Anti-Bacterial

This is my absolute favorite brightening mask. I had really blemished skin in high school and used lots of makeup to cover it up. One summer, I did this face mask about 3-4 times a week and my entire skin cleared up. I stopped wearing makeup altogether. To this day I only wear makeup on special occasions. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and is known to reduce hyperpigmentation on the skin. This is also a great mask to do on other places of your skin that are prone to breaking out such as your back. Please note that turmeric has a very strong color and may stain your clothes. I typically reserve this mask for nighttime so that I can go to sleep and not worry about my face being yellow throughout the day. The yellow stain usually goes away by the time I wake up and wash my face in the morning.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons of plain yogurt (can be greek or regular)

1 heaping spoon of turmeric

1/2 tablespoon of honey

Directions:

Place yogurt into a small bowl and slowly mix in the turmeric and honey. You can play with the ratio of yogurt to turmeric if you want a thicker consistency. Keep the mask on for 15-20minutes or until the mask begins to crack on your skin.

Rinse with warm water & pat skin dry (don’t use a white towel for this!).

To store: Keep in fridge for no more than two days in airtight container.

Chamomile Clay Mask

Benefits: Draws out impurities and revitalizes skin.

I love making this mask when I find that my skin has gotten too oily during summer. This mask is also great to get rid of pore-clogging impurities that produce blemishes. Normal and Oily skin types can use clay masks up to two times a week. It is recommended that dry skin types only use it once a week.

Ingredients:

2 heaping tablespoons of cosmetic grade french green clay (or your favorite clay)

1/4 tablespoon of vitamin E

Chamomile tea or organic rose petal tea (brewed with distilled water)

Directions:

Place clay into a small bowl and slowly mix in the vitamin E and tea. You can play with the ratio of clay to tea if you want a thicker consistency. Keep the mask on for 15-20minutes or until the mask begins to crack on your skin.

Rinse with warm water & pat skin dry.

To store: Keep in fridge for no more than two days in airtight container.

Facial Steam

Benefits: Open up the pores in order to purify, soften, hydrate and increase circulation of skin.

Facial steams should only be used up to once a week.

Ingredients:

4-6 tablespoons of herb/flower blend

2 quarts of distilled water

Directions:

Add your herb/flower blend to boiling water. Cover the pot with a lid and steep for 10-15 minutes. Pour the blend into a heatproof bowl. Place your face about 8 inches above the bowl and drape a large towel over your head in order to keep steam from escaping.

Enjoy steam for up to 12 minutes, stop right away if it becomes too hot or uncomfortable.

Strain the remaining liquid from the herb, splash over your face and pat dry.

To Store: Any remaining liquid can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days and used as a facial toner or hair rinse. I like to place some of the liquid into a tiny spray bottle and spritz my face throughout the day when I need a little refresher.
