Self-care care has been all the rave lately and I’m here for it! Unfortunately, our definition of self-care has become checking off a list of cute things to do and going right back to our excessive schedules. Oxford Dictionaries define self-care as “the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health”. This means that it’s an active continuation of a wellness practice. Preserving or improving our wellness doesn’t happen with a one-time checklist once a month. It happens with those little wins over a long period of time.
Why Caring For Yourself Is Crucial
I’m going to be completely honest, I am not the best at caring for myself. I tend to make sure everyone else is taken care of before even thinking about myself. This can look selfless to some on the outside. The reality is that I’m not able to care for those I love if I am not caring for myself. The other day, I was stuck in bed all day with a migraine because I overworked myself and forgot to drink enough water a few days before. This was a direct result of me not putting my wellness above work.
Doing a lavish skincare routine the next day definitely crossed off a self-care task for the week, it didn’t change the fact that I’m not continually incorporating something as simple as drinking water into my schedule. A spa day is great, but it won’t improve my overall wellness if I’m not being mindful of changing my daily practices. Your entire well-being needs to be at the forefront of self-care.
I am no self-care or wellness expert but I do know that incorporating it into my everyday schedule has definitely improved my overall health. Below are self-care ideas you can do every day & ideas for an entire day of self-care.
Remember that it’s not about checking off tasks from the list, but instead about being mindful of yourself every single day…and don’t forget to drink water!
